Why We Write Simply

Just a super-short, super-quick post to say that I loved Sergio Troncoso's recent blog entry, "Why I Write Simply," and think you should read it, too.

I relate to a lot of what Sergio Troncoso wrote. When I started studying creative writing in a serious way, I made a rookie mistake. I read some books by writers whose prose was somewhat "intellectual," packed with complicated words. I thought that since those books are considered to be well written and are much respected in the literary world, my prose must be too simplistic. I went through one of my essays and inserted some more difficult words that I thought made the language sound more educated and interesting. A faculty member pointed out to me that I no longer sounded like myself; he reminded me to write with my own voice. Since then I've given up trying to be something I'm not.
